HV Battery Coolant - Drain and Refill

FRT No: 16010005

Special tools required for this procedure:

Supplier Part Number Description
Tesla 1057671-00-A BATTERY COOLANT DRAIN TOOL
Tesla 1057672-00-A BATTERY COOLANT FILL TOOL
Tesla 1046911-00-A ASY, BATTERY COOLANT SERVICE FIXTURE
Tesla 1076148-00-A ASY, SERVICE BATTERY COOLANT WASTE RESERVOIR
The HV battery retains approximately 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of coolant when it is removed from the vehicle. Follow this procedure to drain the coolant before shipping the battery, or to refill a new or remanufactured battery before installing it.

Drain

Warning: If the battery is suspected to have a coolant leak, do not perform this procedure. Contact Service Engineering for assistance.

  1. Remove the thumbnuts and washers from the coolant service fixture.
  2. Place the coolant service fixture over the coolant Rapid Mate.
  3. Install the washers and thumbnuts.
  4. Prepare the coolant drain tool:
    1. Close the valve.
    2. Connect a compressed air line to the drain tool.
    3. Connect the coolant service fixture fill hose to the drain tool.
      1 Connect compressed air line
      2 Valve (closed position)
3 Connect coolant service fixture fill hose
  5. Position the coolant service fixture drain hose into the coolant waste reservoir, a bucket, or other appropriate used coolant receptacle.
1 Hose to coolant waste reservoir, bucket, or other appropriate used coolant receptacle
2 Hose to coolant drain tool
  6. Slowly open the valve on the drain tool.
Note: The drain tool has a pressure regulator to prevent the HV battery from being overpressurized.
  7. Once approximately 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of coolant has been removed, close the valve on the drain tool, then remove the coolant service fixture from the HV battery.

Refill

Caution: Only fill the battery with the specified coolant. In this manual, refer to General Information > Fluids and Capacities > Fluids.

  1. Fill the battery coolant fill tool with the specified coolant.
  2. Connect the coolant service fixture to one of the hoses on the fill tool.
  3. Position the other hose on the coolant service fixture to drain into a bucket or other appropriate used coolant receptacle.
  4. Ensure that the switch on the fill tool is set to "Dispense".
  5. Open the fill valve on the fill tool.
  6. Pump the hand pump to fill the battery with the specified coolant.
Note: The fill tool has a pressure regulator to prevent the battery from being overpressurized.
Note: Watch the coolant level in the fill tool. If the coolant level drops too low, the fill tool pumps air into the battery and the procedure has to be repeated.
  7. When the battery is nearly full, the coolant starts to rise in the drain hose. Close the fill valve when the coolant exiting the battery is mostly free of air bubbles.
Note: The coolant exiting the battery does not need to be completely free of air bubbles.
  8. Open the relief valve on the fill tool.
  9. Remove the coolant service fixture from the HV battery.
Tip: The 2 hoses on the coolant service fixture can be connected to each other for easier handling and storage.
