Coolant Heater - Electric - Battery (Remove and Replace)

Warning: Only technicians who have been trained in High Voltage Awareness are permitted to perform this procedure. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and insulating HV gloves with a minimum rating of class 00 (500V) must be worn any time a high voltage cable is handled. Refer to Tech Note TN-15-92-003, "High Voltage Awareness Care Points" for additional safety information.

Removal

  1. Remove the HEPA filter duct (refer to procedure).
  2. Remove the HV Battery (refer to procedure).
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Lift the rear cowl for access.
  5. Disconnect the gray connector from the forward junction box (FJB).
  6. Maneuver the HV cable past the other HV cables and towards the bottom of the vehicle.
  7. Lift the vehicle.
  8. Release the barrel clip that secures the HV cable to the stud on the bulkhead above the DCDC converter.
  9. Release the barrel clip that secures the HV cable to the stud on the bulkhead.
  10. Release the bolt that secures the battery heater bracket to the chassis (torque 7 Nm).
  11. Release the nut that secures the battery heater bracket to the stud on the bulkhead (torque 7 Nm).
  12. Place a coolant catch can below the battery heater before continuing to the next step of this procedure.
  13. Release the locking ring that secures the lower coolant hose to the battery heater. Release the hose from the nipple.
    Note: Place suitable absorbent material around the affected area to absorb any possible fluid spillage.
  14. Release the last barrel clip that secures the HV cable to the stud on the bulkhead above the battery heater.
  15. Pull the battery heater bracket away from the studs on the bulkhead.
  16. Remove the bolts (x3) that secure the battery heater bracket to the battery heater (torque 8 Nm).

  17. Disconnect the 12V connector from the battery heater.
  18. Remove the push clips (x2) that secure the 12V harness to the battery heater bracket.
  19. Remove the battery heater bracket from the vehicle.
  20. Lower the battery heater down and clamp the upper coolant hose.
  21. Release the locking ring that secures the upper coolant hose to the battery heater. Release the hose from the nipple.
    Note: Place suitable absorbent material around the affected area to absorb any possible fluid spillage.
  22. Remove the battery heater from the vehicle.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Ensure that the coolant hoses are not kinked.
